Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland covers 18 square kilometers of volcanic terrain. The public park area uses a simple loop system. You start on Walk 1 and can choose to add Walks 2 and 3 along the way. All paths return to the main visitor center.

How long is Walk 1 at Wai-O-Tapu?

Walk 1, also known as the Red Loop, is 1.5 kilometers long and takes 30 minutes to complete.

This main circuit holds the most famous hot springs. You will see the Champagne Pool, which is the park's largest feature. It has a bright orange rim and bubbles with carbon dioxide.

You will also pass the Devil's Bath. This crater holds neon-green water colored by sulfur and ferrous salts. The Artist's Palette sits nearby, offering a steaming terrace of changing colors.

What do Walks 2 and 3 add to the route?

Walks 2 and 3 extend your route to a total of 3 kilometers, taking roughly 75 minutes.

These connected pathways take you past deeper craters and delicate silica formations. Walk 2 features Primrose Terrace. This is the largest sinter terrace in New Zealand.

Walk 3 reaches the furthest edge of the park. You will pass Echo Lake, a highly acidic body of water. The trail ends at a small waterfall dropping into the green-tinted Lake Ngakoro.

Are there safety rules for the walking tracks?

You must stay on the clearly defined wooden boardwalks and marked tracks at all times.

The ground surrounding the paths is unstable and boiling. Children require close supervision from an adult at all times.

The entire geothermal park is a strictly smoke-free environment. Drones are also prohibited to protect the delicate natural features and visitor privacy.

What should I wear on the Wai-O-Tapu trails?

Wear comfortable, enclosed walking shoes with a good grip.

Much of the track is exposed to the sun. Bring sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. A light rain jacket is useful because the weather changes quickly in New Zealand.

You might also want a face mask or scarf. This helps if you are sensitive to the strong sulfur smell near the vents.
